With the enthusiastic support of educators, farmers, scientists, and community leaders, the program quickly expanded into SCHOOL Week—bringing soil literacy directly into classrooms and empowering the next generation with the knowledge to care for our land.

In the realm of sustainable agriculture, Healthy Soils Australia emerges
as a beacon, championing the cause of nurturing our lands for a resilient
and flourishing future. The heartbeat of our ecosystems lies in the health
of the soil beneath our feet, and this organization is at the forefront of
this crucial mission.

Healthy Soils Australia recognizes that measuring the success of
nature-based solutions involves more than just addressing climate
concerns. It delves into the intricate tapestry of our ecosystems, focusing
on the vitality of our soils. In a world where biodiversity loss is a looming
threat, this organization takes a holistic approach. By amalgamating
scientific expertise, local knowledge, and data-driven insights, it
endeavours to measure and enhance the health of our soils.

We - Healthy Soils Australia - are a network of great number of leading innovative farmers, scientists and advocates. We want to increase the amount of land in Australia, and globally, being transitioned to regenerative farming. We are catalysts who work with others to provide soil related solutions to address their priorities and outcomes. Predominantly we have done, and continue to do this by:

establishing what innovative farmers and graziers are doing, in their individual ways, to create healthy soils.
becoming an integrator voice for all individuals and organisations with healthy soils on their agenda.
raising awareness about healthy soils - providing free access to a wide range of reliable and relevant research, practical information, and discussion on soil remediation solutions at conferences and at regional workshops
promoting the recognition of the capital value of sequestered soil carbon and a fair price for land managers.
presenting soil related issues to government, business and the community.
writing explanatory briefs on how we rehydrate and cool our planet through sustainable agriculture.

Carbon

Soil Carbon Facts

Carbon forms more chemical compounds than all other elements combine. It is the building block of life. Soil carbon takes three distinct forms:

Living carbon in the form of microbes, fungi, plant roots, nematodes, earth worms etc.
Labile carbon comprising decomposing (dead) plant and animal material that is in a state of transition;
Fixed carbon consisting of stable compounds as humates and glomalins.
Sequestered carbon comprises the fixed carbon plus the total living biomass, however tradable sequestered carbon is likely to be only fixed stable carbon humates and perhaps glomalins. Fossil carbon is the remains of living organisms that have become trapped in geological formations in the form of coal, oil, and natural gas. The by-product of burning these fossil fuels (mainly carbon dioxide) is accumulating in the atmosphere and oceans and causes global warming. HSA believes that all current and legacy emissions from burning fossil fuels, land clearing and the destruction of soil organisms can be potentially absorbed by plants and sequestered either as living carbon or fixed carbon. Soil carbon is roughly 58% of soil organic matter (SOM).

Decision Making

Our decision-making has been the cause of land degradation in human civilisations for thousands of years. Great civilisations have come and gone, and their collapse has been the result of poor decision-making. Developed by Allan Savory, holistic management is a new decision-making framework that managers in a variety of enterprises, cultures, and countries are using to help ensure that the decisions they take are economically, socially, and environmentally sound in both short and long-term. This decision making process can be used to then determine what methodologies or process we can us in our land management.

Its about healthy living soil and food integrity

Healthy soil is crucial to plant health. Soil microbes have a symbiotic relationship with plants, as plants provide sugars/exudates to microbes and microbes make nutrients bio-available for plants, plants then provide nutrients to animals and plants and animals provide vital nutrients to humans.Healthy Soil - Healthy Plants - Healthy People.

Plants produce complex organic molecules like sugars that they exude from their roots to encourage the microorganism populations that comprise a healthy soil. In turn, microorganisms, by way of their complex ecology, release minerals that are already in the soil so that they are bio-available to plants. Microorganisms such as fungi with their extensive network of filaments, deliver water and nutrients from a wider area than the plant roots cover. These symbiotic relationships between microorganisms in the soil and the plants above are natural processes and will maintain themselves, provided they are not destroyed by excessive chemical or mechanical disturbance.
